Faustino I Gran Reserva is one of the most famous Rioja wines ever — a benchmark for the region for decades and still the best-selling Gran Reserva worldwide.
The Faustino winery originated in Oyón in the Rioja Alavesa region , where Julio Faustino laid the foundation for one of Spain's most important wineries in the 1960s. The Tempranillo grape—complemented by small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo—grows here on calcareous clay soils, which give the wine its characteristic structure. As a Gran Reserva, the wine spends at least two years in oak barrels and a further three years in the bottle before leaving the winery.
In the glass, it displays ripe blackberry and plum , underpinned by vanilla and cedar from barrel aging. With time, it opens up to spicy notes of leather and tobacco. The palate is full-bodied with softly integrated tannins, the acidity remains lively – the finish is long and balsamic.
Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Pairs well with leg of lamb, Ibérico pork, or aged Manchego cheese . If you have an open bottle: decant it two hours before drinking; it's worth it.

Should I decant the wine?
Yes, absolutely. At least two hours before drinking in a carafe — the 2016 is ready to drink, but opens up significantly with air. This is especially true if you are serving it at the table.
What does the Faustino I Gran Reserva pair best with?
Leg of lamb, braised beef, or Ibérico pork are classic companions. It also works well with aged Manchego or chorizo — the spicy structure of the wine carries strong flavors without overpowering them.
At what temperature should I serve it?
Best at 18–20 °C — slightly below room temperature. In summer, a short rest in the refrigerator (15–20 minutes) is recommended so that it does not enter the glass too warm.
Is the 2016 ready to drink or should I store it longer?
It is good to drink now — five years of bottle aging (three of them in the winery's cellar) have integrated the tannins well. If you like, you can store it for a few more years; kept cool, dark, and lying down, it will handle that without any problems.
What does Gran Reserva mean for a Rioja?
Gran Reserva is the highest aging category in Rioja: at least two years in oak barrels, followed by at least three years in the bottle — before the wine even leaves the winery. This explains the complexity and the soft tannins that characterize this category.
The Bodega
