Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Erste Lage

The Kreuznacher Kahlenberg is one of the oldest Riesling sites in the Nahe — and Dönnhoff shows here what Erste Lage means in practice: not volume, but precision.

The Dönnhoff winery in Oberhausen on the Nahe River has been among Germany's top Riesling producers for decades. Helmut Dönnhoff and his son Cornelius cultivate around 25 hectares along the Nahe River and its side valleys—from light sandstone soils to weathered porphyry. The Kahlenberg vineyard near Bad Kreuznach sits on clay marl soils with loess loam components: this explains the fuller, earthier character compared to the rugged, steep slopes above Oberhausen.

In the glass, the wine displays a cool, restrained nose: herbs, damp earth, grapefruit zest, and a hint of apricot. On the palate, it has a lean body with a firm acidity that is lively yet smooth. This is complemented by a rising salinity and mineral depth that leads to a long, tart, and citrusy finish.

Recommendation: Veal Tafelspitz with herb sauce, pike-perch on lentils, or a mature goat cheese. Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Drinking window 2025–2030.
