Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Erste Lage

Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg Riesling Erste Lage
The Kreuznacher Kahlenberg is one of the oldest Riesling sites in the Nahe — and Dönnhoff shows here what "Erste Lage" means in practice: no loudness, but precision.
The Dönnhoff winery in Oberhausen an der Nahe has been among the German Riesling elite for decades. Helmut Dönnhoff and his son Cornelius manage around 25 hectares along the Nahe and its side valleys — from light sandstone soils to weathered porphyry. The Kahlenberg near Bad Kreuznach is situated on clay marl soils with loess-loam components: this explains the fuller, earthier character compared to the rugged steep slopes above Oberhausen.
In the glass, the wine shows a cool, restrained nose: herbs, damp earth, grapefruit zest, and a hint of apricot. On the palate, a slender body with a firm acid structure that feels lively but without edges. Added to this is an emerging saltiness and mineral depth that makes the finish long and tart-citrus fresh.
Recommendation: Boiled veal with herb sauce, zander on lentils, or a ripe goat cheese. Serving temperature 10–12 °C.
