Coto de Imaz Rioja Gran Reserva

Four years of aging before a bottle leaves the cellar — the Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva is the flagship of El Coto de Rioja and shows what the Gran Reserva category originally stood for.

El Coto de Rioja is one of the most well-known houses in Rioja Alta. The Coto de Imaz ages for at least 24 months in American oak barriques, followed by another two years of bottle aging. This combination gives the Tempranillo time to round out its tannins and develop complexity. The result also convinced the trade press: 95 points from Decanter (2022, 2016 vintage).

In the glass, it shows a dense ruby red with a garnet rim. Aromas of blackberry and black cherry meet vanilla, coconut, and a hint of tobacco — typical for long aging in American oak. On the palate, full body, velvety tannins, and a long, spicy finish with notes of leather and dried fruits.

Serving recommendation: Lamb loin, Ibérico chops, or mature Manchego. Serving temperature 16–18 °C. Decanting for one hour recommended.

El Coto de Rioja

The history of El Coto de Rioja begins in 1970 with the first harvest and continues with the opening of the production facilities in 1976. The Spanish winery is located in the north of the country, an hour and a half from the city of Bilbao. The winery has a total vineyard area of approximately 760 hectares, which is divided into eight different locations.

Among the largest locations are Finca Los Almendros and Finca Carbonera. In the winery's cellar, the wines are stored in more than 75,000 barrique barrels.

On the clayey soils, grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Viura, Sauvignon Blanc, or Garnacha are grown for the production of the wines. El Coto de Rioja is represented internationally and exports its products to over 70 countries worldwide.
