Portia Summa

Old vines, new oak, plenty of time: The Portia Summa shows what Ribera del Duero can do when all the ingredients are right.

Bodegas Portia is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero, near Gumiel de Izán. The striking winery – designed by British star architect Norman Foster – belongs to the Faustino Group and works exclusively with Tempranillo grapes from its own property. The Summa is the pinnacle of this work: hand-picked grapes from vines that are older than 60 years and have anchored their roots deep in the lime-rich, loamy soils of the high plateau.

Fermentation and 14 months of aging in new French oak barrels shape the aroma profile: dark blackberry, cassis, and plum, underscored by cedar wood, cocoa powder, and a hint of roasted herbs. The palate shows a full body with dense but already integrated tannins – the long roots of old vines give the wine a depth and fruit sweetness that the new wood usage does not mask. The finish is long, warm, with a slightly mineral note.
