Andreas Laible Durbacher Plauelrain Scheurebe Spätlese

Scheurebe is the more idiosyncratic sister of Riesling — and in Andreas Laible's hands, it shows what this grape variety is capable of: rose scent, herbal spice, and a fruit sweetness that never becomes heavy.

Andreas Laible has been cultivating steep slopes around Durbach at the foot of the Black Forest for decades, one of the warmest and steepest wine-growing regions in Baden. The Plauelrain is one of the best sites in the town — weathered granite and gneiss rock that gives the vines minerality and tension.

On the nose, the wine opens with rose petals, fresh herbs, and a hint of exotic fruit. On the palate, it shows fine fruit sweetness, which is kept in balance by a lively acidity — this makes it by no means heavy despite the Spätlese sweetness. Firm body, mineral finish, long finale.

• Pairs with: Asian cuisine with ginger and coriander, goat cheese, tarte flambée with pear and Gorgonzola
