From blend supplier to Speyside single malt: the history of the Tamnavulin Distillery
The Tamnavulin Distillery stands where a mill already existed in the Livet Glen in the 16th century. "Tamnavulin" is Gaelic and simply means "mill on the hill" — the old mill wheel still adorns the bottle label today. The distillery was founded in 1966 by the Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Co., a subsidiary of Invergordon Distillers, to meet the growing demand of large blended houses such as Whyte & Mackay, Crawfords, and Mackinlay's. From the beginning, Tamnavulin was not a romantic family project, but a deliberately industrial operation — built for reliability and volume during the whisky-enthusiastic boom of the 1960s. In 1993, Whyte & Mackay took over the parent company Invergordon and thus also Tamnavulin. In the mid-1990s, when the market for blends collapsed, the distillery was shut down — a pause that would last until 2007. After extensive modernization, Tamnavulin resumed production, today under the umbrella of the Philippine business group Emperador Inc.
Spring water, copper stills, and a bio-plant: how Tamnavulin works
The water that helps shape the character of this whisky comes from underground springs in the nearby hills of the Cairngorm foothills — soft, clear, low in minerals. The distillery works with one mash tun, nine stainless steel washbacks, and three pairs of copper pot stills, which produce a light, grain-like new make in two distillation runs. The annual capacity is over four million liters. In 2018, a bio-plant was installed to treat production wastewater — one of the more modern facilities of its kind in Speyside. Around 20,000 casks are stored in a mixture of traditional dunnage and modern rack warehouses; the cool, damp Speyside climate ensures even, slow maturation.
Single malt, double character: the Wine Cask Editions
For a long time, Tamnavulin supplied its malt anonymously for blends. Since 2016, the distillery has appeared under its own name — and has found a clearly defined style. The new make first matures in American ex-bourbon white oak casks. This results in the base typical for Tamnavulin: hay flowers, green apple and pear fruit, a hint of grain. What then makes the range unmistakable is the second maturation step. Under the motto "Single malt, double flavour," the whiskies are finished in carefully selected wine casks — sherry, tawny port, Spanish Grenache, but also French Cabernet Sauvignon and German Pinot Noir. The latter two can also be found in the Vinoscout range: the French Cabernet Sauvignon Casks bring dark berry fruit and spicy depth, while the German Pinot Noir Casks work with the more elegant, cooler aromas of the Burgundy. After the wine cask finish, the whiskies are briefly married again in bourbon casks for harmonization. The result is an accessible, aromatically multi-layered Speyside malt — serving temperature: 15–18 °C, neat or with a small ice cube.
