Château Phélan Ségur

At Château Phélan Ségur, the grapes are selectively hand-harvested in the vineyard into small crates and then rigorously sorted again in the winery to ensure that only perfectly healthy and optimally ripened grapes enter the fermenters. After approximately eight to ten days of temperature-controlled fermentation (25 to 30 °C) in stainless steel tanks, the wines remain on the skins for another ten to twenty days to extract intense color pigments, aromas, and tannins. They are then carefully racked, the crushed grapes are pressed in pneumatic presses, the free-run and press wines are blended, and finally, the wine is aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barriques (approximately 50% new wood).

Château Phélan Ségur Saint Estèphe

Château Phélan Ségur —
artisanal Bordeaux from Saint-Estèphe

Château Phélan Ségur lies in the heart of Saint-Estèphe , the northernmost of the great Médoc appellations. The appellation is known for its heavy, clay-rich soils, which impart a pronounced structure and natural coolness to the wines—qualities that are directly reflected in the style of the Château.

In the vineyard, the grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, selectively, into small crates. A second, rigorous sorting process takes place in the cellar. Only perfectly healthy, optimally ripened grapes are selected for fermentation. Temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks lasts eight to ten days; the wines then remain on the skins for another ten to twenty days to fully extract color depth, aromas, and ripe tannins.

The wines mature for 14 to 18 months in French oak barriques, roughly half of which are new. The result is Bordeaux red wines with the tannin structure typical of Saint-Estèphe, complemented by the finesse made possible by careful hand-harvesting and controlled extraction. Recommended pairing: braised lamb rump, entrecôte, or aged Comté cheese.
