Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott Riesling VDP Grosses Gewächs

The Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott is one of the most historically significant vineyards in Germany — and a Riesling that carries this origin in the glass.

The site lies on a steep, narrow fault line exactly on the border between Rheinhessen and the northern Palatinate. Pure limestone rock as a subsoil, protected from rain and harsh direct light by the narrow terrain structure — this results in a microclimate that differs significantly from the nearby Frauenberg: less exposure, more precision. As early as 700 AD, the Irish monk Philipp von Zell planted his mass wine vineyard here. The weathered wooden cross that the monks set up so they wouldn't have to return to the monastery for every prayer gave the site its name. The Schwarzer Herrgott is thus one of the oldest documented wine-growing locations of all.

As a VDP Grosses Gewächs, the wine stands for dry aging at the highest level. The limestone rock gives the Riesling a fine minerality, creamy texture, and a cool, precise acid structure. Typical of this site: aromas of white peach and citrus peel, a hint of chalk and flint, long, salty finish.

Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. Pairs with fried turbot, scallops with cauliflower, or a mature mountain cheese.
