Sperss Barolo DOP 1.5L

The Sperss from Gaja is a Barolo with depth and strictness: citrus notes at the beginning, then cedar wood and spices. The 1.5-liter magnum bottle makes it the wine for the large table.

Gaja stands for Piedmont like hardly any other house. The winery was founded in 1859 and is still run by the Gaja family today. The name Sperss comes from the Piedmontese dialect and means nostalgia. The wine carries the origin designation Barolo DOP, is vinified dry, and comes from Italy's northwest.

In the glass, it opens with citrus, underneath lie juniper, ripe cherries, and plums. Added to this are marzipan, sweet spices, and a trace of turmeric. The wood gives additional depth but remains in balance with the spicy and sweet notes. On the palate, the tannins appear fine and present without dominating. The finish is clean, precise, and strict.

Serve it at 16–18 °C and open the bottle in good time before the meal. It goes well with braised beef cheeks, game ragout, tajarin with truffles, or mature Parmigiano Reggiano.
