Sassicaia Bolgheri Superiore DOC

Sassicaia is one of Italy's most famous red wines — and at the same time, the origin of an entire wine region. Cabernet Sauvignon meets one of Italy's most unlikely sites here: stony soils near the Tuscan coast, where no one would have suspected world-class red wine before.

The story begins in the 1940s, when Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc at the Tenuta San Guido estate in Bolgheri — inspired by the great Bordeaux that were no longer available due to the war. The name is derived from the Italian sassi, meaning "stones," and refers to the stone-rich subsoil of the site, which gives the wine its characteristic minerality. Today, Bolgheri Sassicaia is the only single-wine DOC in Italy to bear the name of a winery in its own appellation.

In the glass, it shows deep ruby red. On the nose, it opens with black cherry, blackberry, and a hint of mint, plus tobacco and a clearly perceptible mineral line. The palate is dense and full, with fine and well-integrated tannins, and a balanced structure. The finish is long and accompanied by subtle herbal notes.

Best served at 17–18 °C with braised beef, rack of lamb with rosemary, or aged Pecorino. Anyone who has a bottle in the cellar can wait a few more years — the wine continues to develop with time.
