Pinot Gris from the Grand Cru Kitterlé is not an easy entry into Alsace — it is a statement. The site above Guebwiller is one of the steepest and most idiosyncratic Grands Crus of the region, and Domaines Schlumberger has been cultivating it for generations with a consistency that one feels in the glass.

Schlumberger is the largest private winery in Alsace by area: around 140 hectares, a significant portion of which is in the Grands Crus Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering, and Spiegel. The Kitterlé itself is volcanically influenced sandstone with steep terraces and southern exposure — soils that store heat and force vines to deep rooting. Pinot Gris reacts to this terroir with density and aromatic intensity.

In the glass, a luscious style with clear structure shows: ripe yellow plum, candied apricot, a hint of white pepper and ginger in the background. The sweetness does not appear heavy because it is carried by a lively acidity and a slightly salty, mineral note. The finish is long, warm, and spicy.

This wine pairs best with dishes that can handle sweetness and spice: fried duck breast with orange sauce, strongly spiced blue cheese like Roquefort, or a classic Alsatian Munster cheese pastry. Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. Those who use it as a dessert accompaniment are right with Tarte Tatin or an almond cake.
