Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage in GP
The Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage is one of South Africa's most important red wines — a wine that shows what old vines and consistent craftsmanship can achieve with this native grape variety.
Kanonkop is located in the Simonsberg-Stellenbosch region at the foot of Kanonkop Hill, one of the Cape's most prestigious addresses. The estate has been family-owned for generations and is considered a benchmark for Pinotage worldwide. The grapes for the Black Label come from vines over 65 years old—deeply rooted in weathered granite soil, with naturally low yields and correspondingly concentrated berries. Eighteen months of aging in oak barrels give the wine structure and depth without masking the fruit.
In the glass, it displays dark blackberry and plum, underpinned by dark chocolate, cedarwood, and a hint of roasted coffee bean. The body is dense, the tannins firm yet silky—not an angular young wine, but one with genuine aging potential until 2035+. The finish is long and spicy.
Serving temperature: 17–18 °C. Pairs well with braised leg of lamb, beef fillet with a herb crust, or aged hard cheese. If opened young, decant for at least one hour.
