JJ Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard is one of the great Riesling sites of the Middle Moselle — and JJ Prüm is the winery that has most consistently shaped it. The 2023 Spätlese demonstrates why this combination has been setting standards for decades.

Winery & Vineyard: Joh. Jos. Prüm cultivates 22 hectares in Bernkastel-Wehlen, focusing on the Sonnenuhr vineyard—a steep slope of blue Devonian slate that retains heat while simultaneously providing mineral depth. The winery is a VDP member and has been known for generations for its long-lived, precise Rieslings. Vinification is traditional: fermentation in large wooden casks, followed by extended lees aging.

In the glass: Typical of young Prüm Spätlese wines: initially reserved, then the nose opens up with peach, apricot, and a hint of white blossoms. On the palate, the natural residual sweetness supports the lively Moselle acidity—not a contradiction, but a perfect balance. Mineral, slightly slatey and salty finish.

Serving suggestion: Now with Asian cuisine, goat cheese, or smoked salmon. Drinking window easily extends to 2035 — with further cellaring, petrol notes and complexity will develop. Serving temperature: 10–12 °C.
