JJ Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is one of the great Riesling sites of the Middle Mosel — and J.J. Prüm is the winery that shapes it most consistently. The 2023 Spätlese shows why this combination has been setting standards for decades.

Winery & Site: Joh. Jos. Prüm cultivates 22 hectares in Bernkastel-Wehlen, with a focus on the Sonnenuhr — a steep slope of blue Devonian slate that stores heat and simultaneously ensures mineral depth. The winery is a VDP member and has been known for generations for long-lived, precise Rieslings. Vinification is traditional: fermentation in large wooden barrels, long aging on the lees.

In the glass: Typical for young Prüm Spätlesen: initially reserved, then the nose opens with peach, apricot, and a hint of white flowers. On the palate, the natural residual sweetness carries the lively Mosel acidity — not a contradiction, but a balance. Mineral, slightly slate-salty finish.

Drinking recommendation: Now with Asian cuisine, goat cheese, or smoked salmon. With further cellar time, petrol notes and complexity increasingly develop. Serving temperature: 10–12 °C.
