Herzschlag Cabernet Sauvignon

The Herzschlag is the entry into the world of red wines at Bergdolt-Reif & Nett — a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Palatinate that shows what the region can do with this grape variety: structure, depth, and yet a drinkability that makes the heart beat faster.

Bergdolt-Reif & Nett is one of the most renowned wineries in the Palatinate. The family cultivates vineyards around Duttweiler and Ruppertsberg on sandy loam and limestone — soils that give the Cabernet Sauvignon both warmth and minerality. The climate of the Palatinate, one of the warmest wine-growing regions in Germany, ensures that the grape variety ripens fully here and shows no green sharpness.

In the glass, the wine glows in a deep ruby red. Aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry are in the foreground, accompanied by a hint of dark plums and fine spice. On the palate, it presents itself as dry, with well-integrated tannins and a fresh structure that keeps the finish lively.

Served at 16–18 °C, it pairs well with pan-seared beef steak, lamb chops with rosemary, or a hearty pasta ragù. It also cuts a fine figure for an uncomplicated evening with good friends and a wooden board with hard cheese.

The Winery

Weingut Bergdolt-Reif & Nett

Five generations, one place: Duttweiler in the Palatinate. The Bergdolt-Reif & Nett winery has deep roots here – the historic sandstone vaulted cellar dates back to 1838, and some of the wines still mature in it today. At the same time, the winery opened a new building in 2017 that shows where the journey is heading: creative, independent, without a template.

Since Christian Nett began helping to steer the ship in the early 2000s, the range has been anything but predictable. Clear wines of origin from the Palatinate stand alongside so-called concept wines, where an idea dictates the style. Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, and Merlot show that the Palatinate is capable of more than the expected.
