Frauenberg Riesling VDP Grosses Gewächs

The Frauenberg is one of the great Riesling sites of Rheinhessen — and this GG shows why: taut structure, cool minerality, long finish.

The H.O. Spanier winery in the Wonnegau has brought the historic steep slope back into the consciousness of the wine world after decades of oblivion. The Frauenberg north of Hohen-Sülzen lies at an altitude of up to 280 meters, slopes south with an incline of up to 40%, and is nevertheless permeated by cool winds. The soil is limestone rubble over a massive limestone base — barren, mineral-rich, deeply rootable. Documented as early as 1290 as "an frauwenhalten", the site originally belonged to a nunnery.

In the glass: light gold color, restrained nose with citrus zest, white peach, and a clear limestone tone. On the palate, dense, cool-acting acidity structure that tautens the wine without becoming too edgy. The finish is long, salty, and mineral — typical for Riesling from deep limestone soil.

Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Pairs with turbot with beurre blanc, pan-fried zander, or ripe Comté.
