Delheim Vera Cruz Pinotage

Pinotage at the level that this grape variety so often lacks: dark, juicy, with real substance — not a simple everyday wine, but a Stellenbosch red wine with attitude.

Delheim is situated on the Simonsberg slopes in the heart of Stellenbosch. The winery was established in the 1950s by Michael Hans "Spatz" Sperling and remains family-owned to this day. The Vera Cruz Pinotage bears the name of his wife, Vera—a personal wine with corresponding ambition. The 2017 vintage received five stars from John Platter and 95 points from Tim Atkin.

In the glass: deep ruby red with a violet rim. The nose reveals black cherry and mulberry, with a distinct hint of dark chocolate underneath. On the palate, full-bodied, the fruit juicy and direct, tannins round and well-integrated, long finish without any harshness.

Serving temperature 16–18 °C. Pairs well with leg of lamb with rosemary, grilled beef steak, or spicy cheeses like Manchego. Also a convincing companion on its own in the evening.

Delheim

Delheim – South African wines with a German heart. Founder Hans Otto Hoheisen came to South Africa from Germany in the 30s, set up the farm and vineyards on Simonsberg, and built his wife Deli a cozy parlor – “Deli’s Heim” became the name. He had a sense of adventure, but he lacked winemaking skills. Giving up? Not an option. Somehow he managed his first Cabernet.

From 1958, “Spatz” Sperling took over the cellar – with ambition, humor, and a Chenin Blanc with the ugliest label of 1970: “Spatzendreck”. A piece of German-South African wine history.
