Blaufränkisch from limestone
Blaufränkisch, as it could have come from the Leithaberg textbook: light, precise, with a cool fruitiness that makes the limestone soil noticeable.
Markus Altenburger is one of the most reliable winemakers in Burgenland. His winery in the Leithaberg DAC region works with the limestone-rich soils of the Leitha Mountains – a geologically distinct terroir that produces Blaufränkisch that is more elegant and aromatically refined than the heavy iron-rich soils further south. Cool nights slow down the ripening process, keeping the acidity vibrant.
In the glass, a deep purple with violet highlights. The nose offers aromas of sour cherry, blackberry, and fresh raspberry, followed by violets and a delicate, cool minerality reminiscent of wet limestone. On the palate, it is juicy and direct, with lively acidity, a smooth texture, and a spicy, medium-length finish. Fourteen months of aging in large double-piece casks give the wine structure without masking the fruit. 13.0% ABV.
Serve at 15–18 °C . Pairs well with duck breast with cherries, Boeuf Bourguignon, pan-fried calf's liver, or a hearty pasta with tomato sauce. Also enjoyable on its own as an evening wine – no special occasion, no waiting required.
