Since 1952: the only cooperative of one of France's oldest appellations
The wine-growing region around Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule in the Bourbonnais is one of the oldest in France — vines have grown here since antiquity, and the wines were once on the tables of French kings and the Popes of Avignon. The L'Union des Vignerons de Saint-Pourçain was founded in 1952 as an agricultural cooperative, shortly after the area received VDQS status in 1951. From the beginning, it had a clear goal: to bring together the region's scattered winemakers and bring the potential of the Bourbonnais into the bottle in a bundled form.
Today, the cooperative is the only one of its kind in the appellation and unites around 40 winemaker families on about 300 hectares of vineyards in the 19 municipalities of the AOP. It vinifies around two-thirds of the entire Saint-Pourçain production — a position it has earned over decades, especially through its efforts in the 1980s, when an ambitious program for replanting the vineyards and qualitatively delineating plots laid the foundation for today's appellation.
Controlled cultivation, modern cellar technology, commitment to the environment
Viticulture in the cooperative follows the principle of conduite raisonnée: precise plot delineation, careful coordination of grape variety and soil type, and ongoing quality control from the vineyard to the cellar. The soils of the appellation alternate between silicate, calcareous-clay, and gravelly-sandy sites — this diversity is reflected in the various cuvées. In the cellar, continuous investment has been made over many years: Bucher presses, temperature-controlled tanks, and modern control systems enable precise, gentle vinification. Harvests and vinification are carried out separately according to grape variety and terroir.
Since 2021, the cooperative has held the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) certificate — already fully implemented for parts of the production. Biodiversity measures such as hedges and flowering strips are part of the ongoing program. The cooperative also includes a tasting gallery with a view into the cuverie as well as an annual wine festival: for more than 30 years, the Union has organized the "Sortie de la Ficelle" every first Saturday in December — the presentation of the new, young red wine.
Tressallier, Gamay, Pinot Noir: the range of an almost forgotten AOP
The AOP Saint-Pourçain — only upgraded from VDQS to Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée in 2009 — has an unusual grape variety profile. The white wines, including "La vie est belle Blanc", are based on Chardonnay and Tressallier: a local variety grown almost exclusively here, which brings citrus freshness, liveliness, and mineral pull to the cuvée. Sauvignon occasionally appears as an accessory partner. The reds are obligatorily created from the combination of Gamay and Pinot Noir — fruity, with fine structure and little extraction. Rosé flows from the cellar as 100 percent Gamay.
The range includes red, white, rosé, and effervescents; around 1.6 million bottles leave the cooperative annually. Those who do not yet know Saint-Pourçain will find here an entry into one of the most idiosyncratic and historically significant, yet still underestimated, wine regions of France.
