The Heitlinger winery in Östringen-Tiefenbach in the Kraichgau region is one of the leading names in German winemaking. Founded in 1960 by Albert Heitlinger, it is now an estate with over 110 hectares of vineyards – together with its sister winery, Burg Ravensburg, one of Germany's largest organic wine producers. Managing Director Claus Burmeister sums it up perfectly: wine should carry the true magic of a place to the nose and palate. From Albert Heitlinger to Germany's largest organic winery
Östringen-Tiefenbach in northern Baden: Here, Albert Heitlinger founded the winery in 1960, which is now one of the defining addresses of German viticulture. Since 2009, Heitlinger and the sister winery Burg Ravensburg have been under joint management — as one GmbH, but still independent operations under wine law. Owner Heinz Heiler, his daughter Christine Jacklin, and their family have shaped this merger into one of the most remarkable wine addresses in Germany. Together, the two houses manage over 110 hectares of vineyards and are thus among the largest organically working wine producers in the country. The next generation has long since arrived: Patrick and Philip Jacklin are driving the quality and reputation of the Kraichgau forward with a clear goal.
Biodynamics as an attitude – not a marketing promise
From 2010, the winery converted its areas to organic-biodynamic farming, and from 2014, biodynamic principles were consistently expanded: own compost management, biodynamic preparations, herbal teas to stimulate soil biology, lunar calendar for pruning and harvesting. Since 2016, the so-called gentle pruning has been added. Since 2023 and 2024 respectively, both wineries have carried the Demeter certificate – the strict Demeter certification is thus confirmation of a long-practiced approach, not a new beginning.
In the vineyard, strict hand-picking applies, without exception – even for the estate wines. Managing Director Claus Burmeister and Cellar Master Daniel Rupp rely on spontaneous fermentation and short distances in the cellar to bring the identity of the terroir unadulterated into the glass. More than half of the vineyard areas are classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE – including Schellenbrunnen, Eichelberg, Spiegelberg, Heinberg, Königsbecher, and Wormsberg, all on the southern slopes of the Kraichgau hills.
Limestone, Burgundy, Riesling – the style of the Kraichgau sites
As early as the 12th century, the Cistercians recognized the suitability of the calcareous hills of the Kraichgau for Burgundy vines. Over 80 percent of the Heitlinger vineyard areas are now planted with Pinot varieties: Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, and Chardonnay – varieties that unfold their Burgundian character on the lime-rich sedimentary soils between Tiefenbach, Eichelberg, Odenheim, and Hilsbach, without losing the cool independence of the Kraichgau. The assortment is complemented by a characterful Riesling, which turns out juicy and clear on these soils. The Blanc de Noir, vinified from the Pinot Meunier grape native to the Kraichgau, stands for the regional specialty of the house.
Since 2012, Heitlinger has been a member of the VDP, the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates. The wines are marketed in over 40 countries. Anyone who opens a Heitlinger does not get international style wines – but bottles behind which site, soil, and biodynamic craftsmanship are readable.
