Burg Ravensburg in Sulzfeld is one of the oldest wineries in Germany – its founding dates back to 1251. Today, Claus Burmeister manages the estate, while cellar master Daniel Rupp and Jürgen Kern are responsible for the cellar. What has changed: the precision in viticulture. What has remained: the ambition to bring the uniqueness of the Kraichgau into every bottle.
36 hectares of vineyards are spread over sites such as the Sulzfelder Löchle, the Dicker Franz, and the Husarenkappe. Clay, gypsum keuper, and loess shape the subsoil – soils that give the Pinot Gris structure, the Lemberger depth, and the Pinot Meunier an unusual freshness. Around 260,000 bottles that carry this character are produced annually.
Gault&Millau awarded Burg Ravensburg four grapes in 2019 and counted the estate among the German elite. Those who know the wines understand why: they are straightforward, typical of their site, and easy to drink – with Tafelspitz just as well as with a mature piece of mountain cheese.
