From the Heuriger cellar to the third generation: Ingrid Groiss in Breitenwaida
The history of the Groiss winery does not begin with a founding document, but with a vineyard: it was Ingrid's grandmother who entrusted her with the lovingly tended vineyard – and thus provided the first impulse for a career as a winemaker. For generations, the Groiss family has been growing vines in the village of Breitenwaida near Hollabrunn, in the northeastern Weinviertel, close to the Czech border. The winery was originally managed for their own Heuriger. Ingrid Groiss herself initially took a different path: she worked in industry – including for an international corporation – before taking over the management of her parents' business in 2010. Previously, she had studied oenology and wine management and gained experience at renowned Austrian wineries, including Domäne Wachau and Birgit Eichinger. Today, she runs the winery in the third generation – a true family business, where her father takes over the tractor work and her mother helps out in the vineyards.
Biodynamic thinking, minimal intervention: Work in the vineyard and cellar
The break with industrial life fundamentally shaped Ingrid's attitude towards nature. In 2016, she converted all 20 hectares to organic farming – for her, not a marketing step, but the consistent further development of her wine style. She views her vineyards as complete ecosystems: grasses and wildflowers grow between the vines, and insect life is deliberately encouraged. The hare, her trademark on the labels, symbolizes this careful handling of the vineyard habitat.

Groiss is a winery from the Weinviertel, one of Austria's most traditional white wine regions. Its location in northern Lower Austria shapes the style of the wines: cool climate, loess-dominated soils, and a viticultural tradition that has known Grüner Veltliner and Riesling as its core grape varieties for generations.
