An unusual origin: Around thirty years ago, the mayor of Azé had vineyards planted on the roof of a prehistoric cave. From this bold idea arose Domaine de la Garenne —today one of the most distinctive wineries in southern Burgundy. Since 2008, the Beaumont family, known for Château de Chamirey in Mercurey, has managed the estate with a clear focus on a single grape variety: Chardonnay.

The vineyards in Mâcon Bussières, Mâcon Azé, and Pouilly-Fuissé lie on limestone soils, which impart a precise minerality and cool fruitiness to the wine that is not found everywhere in the Mâconnais. The wines are elegantly crafted, without heaviness—citrus peel, white peach, a slightly chalky finish. No oak masking, but rather terroir speaking for itself.

A white wine from the estate was selected by Decanter magazine in 2010 as one of the ten best Burgundy Chardonnays of the year—proof that the Mâconnais region is capable of more than just inexpensive everyday wines. Ideal with crayfish, Loire goat cheese, or a simple roast chicken.
