Château Rieussec

In the 18th century, the estate still belonged to the Carmelite monks. Today, Château Rieussec is a famous winery in Sauternes and was designated a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

The Rothschild (Lafite) family has managed the estate since 1984. The 85 hectares of vineyards lie next to Château d'Yquem. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes grow here on gravelly soils.

The secret lies in noble rot. It develops during damp autumn mornings and transforms the grapes into golden treasures. The result: a sweet wine with aromas of citrus and brioche.

Château Rieussec lies in the heart of Sauternes , right next to Château d'Yquem — on gravelly soils that give Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc a precise mineral foundation. The estate was classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855, a distinction it still holds today.

Since 1984, the 85-hectare estate has been owned by the Rothschild family, famous for Château Lafite. The damp autumn mornings in Bordeaux favor the development of Botrytis cinerea—the noble rot that concentrates the grapes and gives them the depth for which Rieussec is known: golden yellow color, aromas of candied citrus, brioche, and a hint of saffron, supported by lively acidity.

Rieussec wines are classic companions to foie gras, Roquefort or a mature Munster — but also on their own, slightly chilled, as the perfect end to an evening that deserves it.
