In the Rhône Valley of France, Michel Chapoutier and his renowned Chapoutier winery occupy entire vineyards on all the steep slopes. The winemaker's story has early beginnings. At just 25 years old, Michel Chapoutier and his brother were entrusted with their father's winery. The two Chapoutier brothers quickly realized that winemaking in the Rhône needed to change drastically to meet the world's new quality standards. The French star winemaker focuses, among other things, on biodynamic viticulture, which is why he is considered one of the most important wineries of our time.

Chapoutier –
biodynamic Rhône wines from steep slopes

Chapoutier is one of the defining names of the Rhône Valley – and that has a lot to do with a generational change that came early. At the age of 25, Michel Chapoutier took over his father's winery together with his brother and quickly realized: viticulture on the Rhône needed a new direction. What followed was not a cosmetic change, but a consistent restructuring – towards biodynamic cultivation, which characterizes the entire winery today.

The vineyards are located on the steep slopes of the Rhône Valley, where granite, slate, and loess determine the terroir. Chapoutier manages sites in the northern Rhône – including Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph – as well as in the south, for example in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Each site is understood as an independent unit: the wines are created parcel-specifically, without compensation through blending across site boundaries.

In the glass, wines with a clear origin appear: the Syrahs from the north with dark fruit, olive, and pepper spice, the southern cuvées with more fullness and garrigue character. Chapoutier wines go well with hearty meat dishes, aged cheese, or a long evening with good food.
