Bodegas Montecillo – one of the wineries that established Rioja's reputation. Since 1874, the oldest winery in the Rioja Alta has focused on barrel-aged red wines. "That's a responsibility and a challenge," says head winemaker María Martínez. "I want to preserve the values of Rioja without making the same wine as our parents and grandparents." Bodegas Montecillo is one of the wineries that have shaped the character of the Rioja Alta – not through sheer volume, but through consistency. Since 1874, they have been producing red wines based on Tempranillo grapes from old vines, harvested by hand and consistently aged in oak barrels. This makes Montecillo the oldest still-operating winery in the Rioja Alta.

Chief winemaker María Martínez carries on this tradition – but not blindly. Her aim: to preserve the classic values of Rioja without freezing the wines. Late harvest for ripe tannins, careful barrel selection, a style that balances fruit and structure. No break with history, but also no repetition.

The result is red wines that can be enjoyed both young and after years of cellaring – with the typical Rioja texture of dark berry fruit, vanilla, and a long, dry finish. Recommended pairing: leg of lamb, aged Manchego cheese, or a simple dish with plenty of roasted flavors.
