Bodegas Montecillo —
Rioja Alta, barrel-aged since 1874
Bodegas Montecillo is one of the wineries that has shaped the character of the Rioja Alta — not as a newcomer, but since 1874. Anyone who has worked on a style for so long bears responsibility: for a region, for a grape variety, for generations of winemakers before them.
Chief oenologist María Martínez puts it in a nutshell: she wants to preserve the values of Rioja without copying the wines of her parents. That sounds like a fine line — and it is. Her approach: Tempranillo from old vines, late hand-picking, aging in barrels. No shortcuts, no fashion trends.
What ends up in the glass shows that tradition does not have to mean stagnation. The wines have fruit and structure, a long finish, and the typical spice of the Rioja Alta — accessible today, capable of development over years. Recommendation: with leg of lamb, mature Manchego, or a simple plate of Jamón.
