Zweigelt Dornenvogel 0.75 2018
The Dornenvogel is Walter Glatzer's answer to the question of what Zweigelt can achieve when given time and wood: a structured red wine from one of the most renowned sites in Carnuntum, which brings more depth than the grape variety often suggests.
The Glatzer winery is located in Göttlesbrunn in Carnuntum, east of Vienna, where loess soils and a continental climate produce fully ripe, full-bodied red wines. Walter Glatzer is one of the pioneers who have elevated Zweigelt beyond the everyday – consistent yield reduction and targeted selection in the vineyard are his craft.
In the glass, the 2018 Dornenvogel displays black cherry, dark blackberry, and a hint of caramel, underpinned by mineral and slightly chocolatey notes. The 14 months in barrique have added structure without masking the fruit: the tannins are ripe and firm, the finish long with a spicy, slightly smoky note.
Best served between 16 and 18 °C . Drinking window until approximately 2026, decanting is recommended now. Pairs well with wild boar roast, entrecôte with herb butter, or aged mountain cheese.
