Woodcutter's Shiraz

A Shiraz from the Barossa Valley that needs no lengthy explanations: dense fruitiness, immediately approachable, with real substance in the background.

Torbreck was founded in 1994 in the Barossa Valley with the explicit goal of producing wines in the style of the Northern Rhône. This is no accident, but rather a deliberate strategy: the vines in the Barossa are partly rooted in vineyards planted with Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre since 1840. Pete Kight has been running the winery since 2013, together with chief winemaker Ian Hongell. Their guiding principle is deliberately provocative: the best grapes have not yet been harvested, the best wines have not yet been made.

In the glass, Woodcutter's Shiraz displays notes of stewed cherries and blueberries, underpinned by cocoa and dark chocolate. The body is full, the mouthfeel dense and pronounced, the finish warm and lingering. Ready to drink now, with potential for further cellaring.

Pairs well with braised lamb loin, grilled beef ribs, or strong hard cheese. Serving temperature: 17–18 °C.
