Westhofen Aulerde Riesling GG

The Aulerde vineyard in Westhofen is considered one of Rheinhessen's great Riesling sites—warm, calcareous, with a depth that is clearly evident in the glass. Wittmann's Grosses Gewächs from this site is not a light summer wine, but a Riesling with substance and aging potential.

The Wittmann winery has cultivated its vineyards in Westhofen biodynamically for generations and is one of the leading wineries in Rheinhessen. In the Aulerde area, the vines root in calcareous loam soil, which gives the wine a creamy texture and a characteristic minerality – less flinty and sharp than in the Mosel, more salty and spicy, accompanied by ripe fruit.

In the glass, the 2023 vintage displays aromas of yellow peach, mirabelle plum, and beeswax, underpinned by a hint of white pepper and limestone. The palate is dense and oily, the acidity well-integrated—not agitated, but supportive. The finish is long, with a salty-mineral note that invites another sip.

Drinking window 2025–2034. Served at 12–13 °C, it pairs well with pike-perch fillet on beurre blanc , mature Comté cheese, or chicken in cream sauce. If opened now, it should be decanted for at least one hour.
