Westhofen Aulerde Riesling GG

The Aulerde in Westhofen is considered one of the great Riesling sites of Rheinhessen — warm, rich in limestone, with a depth that is clearly evident in the glass. Wittmann's Grosses Gewächs from this site is not a light summer wine, but a Riesling with substance and aging potential.

The Wittmann winery has been cultivating its vineyards in Westhofen biodynamically for generations and is one of the defining addresses in Rheinhessen. In the Aulerde, the vines take root in limestone-rich loam soil, which gives the wine a creamy texture and a characteristic minerality — less flinty-sharp than on the Mosel, rather salty-spicy and accompanied by ripe fruit.

In the glass, the 2023 shows aromas of yellow peach, mirabelle plum, and beeswax, underscored by a hint of white pepper and limestone. The palate is dense and oily, the acidity well integrated — not agitated, but supportive. The finish is long, with a salty-mineral line that invites the next sip.

Served at 12–13 °C, it pairs well with zander fillet on Beurre blanc, aged Comté, or chicken in cream sauce. If you open it now, you should decant it for at least an hour.
