Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG

The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is considered one of the great Riesling sites of the Middle Mosel — steep blue slate slope, southern exposure, extreme heat radiation. Schloss Lieser, one of the renowned wineries in the Bernkastel-Kues area, vinifies a Grosses Gewächs from it that needs time and deserves it.

In the glass, the wine shows that it has not yet revealed everything: aromas of ripe yellow fruit, dried herbs, and a distinct yeast note — classic signs of a young, dense Mosel Riesling in development. With air, it opens up, revealing delicate anise tones and a hint of wax. The minerality comes from the slate, not the label.

On the palate: taut, lively acidity, juicy fruit with real grip — not a soft drinking wine, but a Riesling with backbone and depth. Citrus zest in the background, a long, biting finish. Those who open it now get a wine in a stage of development; those who wait will be rewarded with complexity.

The winery Schloss Lieser looks back on a fascinating history that reaches back to the 19th century. The castle was built between 1885 and 1895, the winery founded in 1904. Today the winery is owned by Thomas Haag and stands for a long tradition in the production of high-quality Mosel wines.
