Vergelegen "V" in wooden case

Vergelegen "V" is one of South Africa's most renowned red wines — a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Western Cape that impresses with long cellar work and a Bordeaux-like signature.

The Vergelegen winery near Somerset West looks back on a history that dates back to the year 1700. Today, it is one of the leading addresses at the Cape, known for precise viticulture on well-drained soils at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains. The "V" is the flagship of the house: 18 months of maturation in new French barriques, followed by another 36 months in the bottle before it finds its way to the market.

In the glass, it shows black currant and blackberry, underlaid by cedar wood, dark spices, and a hint of graphite. The tannins are firm but silkily integrated, the finish long and structured.

Best served at 16–18 °C — with rack of lamb with a herb crust, aged cheddar, or a classic beef fillet.

The Winery

Vergelegen

The winery Vergelegen is located on the South African False Bay and is less than an hour from the city of Cape Town. It was founded in the year 1700 by Adriaan van der Stel and is today owned by André van Rensburg. The vines of the winery grow at an altitude between 140 and 310 meters, on clayey soils.

Clay soils are particularly well-suited for the growth of vines due to their ability to absorb water. The climate in this region is characterized by mild temperatures thanks to the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.

For the production of the wines of the Vergelegen winery, grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, or Chardonnay are grown.
