Syrah Gimblett Gravels Vineyard

Syrah from New Zealand has a character of its own — less power than the Rhône, but more finesse and a cooler spice. This wine from the Gimblett Gravels shows exactly that: dark fruit, which is permeated by black pepper, anise, and garrigue herbs.

Craggy Range was founded in 1997 by the Peabody family and Master of Wine Steve Smith, who has been in the wine business since 1980. The winery is located in the shadow of Te Mata Peak in Hawke's Bay and consistently follows a single-vineyard philosophy — every wine should show the peculiarity of its location, nothing more and nothing less. The Gimblett Gravels are one of the most famous sites in the region: deeply drained gravel soils that store heat and drive Syrah to unusual depth.

In the glass, blackberry and raspberry appear, underlaid by cedar wood and a long, spicy finish with a pepper note. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, the acidity gives the wine contour without sharpness.

Pairs with rack of lamb with a herb crust, grilled beef fillet, or a strong hard cheese like Manchego. Serving temperature 16–18 °C.
