Bernhart Schweigener Auxerrois dry "clay marl"

Auxerrois has a long history in the Palatinate - and Bernhart's Tonmergel shows what this grape variety can achieve on loamy-marly soils: a white wine with real body that still retains its freshness.

The Bernhart winery is located in Schweigen, in the far south of the Palatinate, right on the French border. The location brings warm summers, but the eponymous clay-marl soil provides natural cooling for the roots and gives the wine its mineral depth.

In the glass, the Auxerrois shows ripe apple fruit with skin, accompanied by vanilla cream and a hint of herbs. This is joined by fine pastry and biscuit notes, which point to careful aging. On the palate, it is finely juicy with a firm body and a light, lively melt, yet never thin. The finish returns to apple skin, with vanilla pudding and a subtle astringent note that provides structure.
