Paternoster Don Anselmo Aglianico del Vulture DOCG

Don Anselmo is Paternoster's flagship wine – and one of the benchmark wines for Aglianico del Vulture. Anyone wanting to understand what this grape variety is capable of will find a clear answer here.

The Paternoster winery is one of the oldest producers in Basilicata and has significantly shaped the DOCG zone on Monte Vulture, an extinct volcano in southern Italy. The volcanic soils of tuff and ash impart a mineral depth to the Aglianico that is rarely found in other vineyards producing this variety. Don Anselmo is named after founder Anselmo Paternoster and is produced only in the best vintages – featuring extended maceration and aging in large wooden casks.

In the glass, it appears dark, almost opaque. The nose offers black cherry, leather notes, tobacco, and a hint of licorice. On the palate, firm, ripe tannins—typical of Aglianico—are balanced by a lively acidity that carries the wine. The finish is long and spicy, with a mineral aftertaste.

Drinking window: at the earliest now, but better to cellar for another two to five years. Serving temperature 17–18 °C. Classically paired with braised lamb, Brasato al Barolo, or mature Pecorino.

paternoster

Paternoster is one of the great names in the southern Italian wine world – rooted in Basilicata, the wild heart of the Italian boot. Here, at the foot of the extinct volcano Monte Vulture, the Aglianico grapes grow on mineral-rich soils, producing wines with depth, structure and unmistakable character.
What has distinguished Paternoster for generations is a consistent connection to the terroir – no trends, no compromises. The wines tell stories of earth, fire, and time.
