Monferrato Nebbiolo sup. DOCG Illegale

A Nebbiolo whose name says it all: until 2018, it was simply forbidden for winemakers in Monferrato to mention the grape variety on the label — the region was considered Barbera territory, and Nebbiolo officially belonged in the Langhe. Tenuta Santa Caterina ignored this consensus and produced the wine anyway. Today, the name is allowed on the label, but the wine is still called Illegale.

In the glass, it shows why the stubbornness was worth it: sour cherry, a hint of dried rose, and subtle spice in the background. The body is taut, the acidity lively, the tannin firm but not coarse — typical for Nebbiolo, which does not deny its character even outside the classic growing areas. The finish is long and dry with a slightly tart note.

On the table, it makes the biggest impression alongside lasagne al forno, braised wild boar, or an aged hard cheese like Parmigiano Reggiano. Serving temperature: 16–18 °C, preferably open an hour before pouring.
