Mitolo GAM Shiraz

The Mitolo GAM boasts concentrated, ripe fruit, blackberry, and blueberry aromas mingled with hints of herbs, camphor, and flint. Its velvety, palate-pleasing structure is elegant, remarkably complex, and exceptionally long. Thanks to its pronounced fruitiness and exemplary expression of the grape's character, Australian wines impress not only when compared to familiar European wines but also to top wines from other overseas countries. Shiraz, above all other grape varieties, represents Australia's new, burgeoning wine culture. Mitolo GAM Shiraz is a collaborative project between Frank Mitolo and "Australia's Young Winemaker of the Year," Ben Glaetzer. The fully ripe, hand-picked grapes come from prime locations in McLaren Vale. The low but highly concentrated yield from predominantly old vines and 16 months of aging in new French oak barrels make Mitolo McLaren Vale Shiraz a uniquely opulent and profound red wine. Wine critic Robert Parker raves about Ben Glaetzer's wines: "Made from 26-year-old vines and aged in small, new French oak barrels, the wine reveals tremendous fruit with an unprecedented purity. Despite its power and full body, it is neither heavy nor overpowering. A breathtaking Shiraz!" Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate: 95 points

Mitolo Winery

Mitolo – strong and gentle. That's the motto the family brought with them from Abruzzo to Australia. They arrived in the 1950s, staying true to their roots: food, wine, family. In 1999, Frank Mitolo and winemaker Ben Glaetzer met. Five hours of discussion, a business plan scribbled on the back of a napkin. The goal: McLaren Vale in its purest form. The first wine, GAM, was named after Frank's children. Today, Mitolo works closely with the Loprestis – also Italian immigrants. Heavy clay soils, gentle sea breezes, hands-off in the cellar. Italian grape varieties, Italian heritage. And the motto: forte e gentile. Strong and gentle.
