Marimar Mas Cavall's Dona Margarita

The Dona Margarita from the Marimar Estate winery is a characterful red wine from the Russian river valley in Sonoma – despite the name “Mas Cavalls” (Catalan for “horse enclosure”), it is clearly rooted in the New World, with the signature of a winemaker who has never forgotten her roots in Catalan wine culture.

Marimar Torres, sister of Miguel Torres, founded the winery in 1986 in the cool Don Miguel Vineyard in Sebastopol. The vineyards benefit from the maritime influence of the Pacific Ocean – long, cool summers and consistent ripening. The Doña Margarita line is dedicated to the winemaker's mother and represents more powerful, terroir-driven red wines from the estate.

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby to garnet red color. The nose offers aromas of raspberry jam, sweet ripe blueberry, and blackcurrant – underpinned by earthy, spicy notes of moss and forest floor, lending the wine an almost Burgundian groundedness. On the palate, it is round and complex: ripe fruit meets spice and firm, yet gently integrated tannins. The finish is long and promises further aging potential.

Recommendation: Serve at 16–18 °C. Pairs well with braised lamb loin, duck breast with plum sauce, or mature Manchego cheese. Drinking window still open – ready to drink now, but also suitable for cellaring for several years.

Marimar Estate

The story of Marimar Estate began with a bold decision: Marimar Torres, born into the famous Spanish winemaking family Torres, broke with family tradition and moved to California.

In 1986, she planted the first vines in the cool Russian River Valley. Today, the winery cultivates two vineyards: the Don Miguel Vineyard and the Doña Margarita Vineyard .

Here, Catalan heritage meets Californian ease. Alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Spanish varieties such as Albariño, Godello, and Tempranillo are also cultivated.
