Lagoalva de Cima Grande Escolha

The Lagoalva de Cima Grande Escolha from Quinta da Lagoalva is not an everyday wine — and that's precisely what makes it special. Only in the best years does the estate in Portugal's Ribatejo region decide to bottle this single-varietal Alfrocheiro , in strictly limited quantities and with the aim of extracting the very best from this distinctive, profound grape variety.

The wine matures for twelve months in French oak barriques —a decision that is evident in the glass: the fruit remains concentrated and vibrant, while the wood gently adds structure and depth without dominating. The nose reveals dark berry fruits, floral notes, and a spicy complexity that invites lingering. On the palate, the Grande Escolha impresses with silky, ripe tannins , an elegant length, and a complexity not always expected from a wine from the Ribatejo region—but gratefully received here.

This wine pairs perfectly with braised lamb, game dishes, or a well-aged hard cheese . If you buy it now, let it rest in your cellar for a while—it will thank you for it. A rare piece of Portuguese wine culture that you won't always find in this form.

Quinta da Lagoalva

On the southern bank of the Tagus River, not far from the Portuguese town of Alpiarça, lies Quinta da Lagoalva – a winery with a history dating back to the 19th century. As early as 1888, they proudly presented 600 barrels of wine at the Portuguese Industrial Exhibition. This spirit of tradition and passion continues to shape their wines today.

The landscape surrounding the Quinta is uniquely natural: wetlands, vast fields, and the tranquil river. All of this is reflected in the wines, which combine depth and elegance with authentic Portuguese character – from powerful red wines to the exquisite sparkling wines of the premium Dona Isabel Juliana line.
