Kyrö Malt Oloroso Whisky

A Finnish rye whisky with an Oloroso sherry finish — a combination that sounds as unlikely as it tastes convincing.

The Kyrö Distillery in Isokyrö, East Bothnia, has been distilling exclusively with Finnish rye since 2014. No barley, no wheat—the raw material comes from local fields and shapes the character of this whisky range from the ground up. After classic maturation, the Oloroso malt undergoes a finishing period in Oloroso sherry casks from Jerez de la Frontera.

The nose reveals dried figs, raisins, and a hint of cinnamon—the typical profile of a well-chosen sherry cask. On the palate, the characteristic rye spiciness emerges: slightly peppery, with a counterpoint of dark dried fruits and a soft caramel note. The finish is long, slightly dry, and warming.

Both layers are best enjoyed neat at room temperature—first the sherry fruit, then the rye spice. If desired, add a single ice cube to open up the finish. Also pairs well with dark chocolate or a strong blue cheese.
