Kaapzicht Estate Skraalhans Pinotage

The Skraalhans Pinotage from Kaapzicht Estate is an uncomplicated, juicy interpretation of South Africa's most important proprietary grape variety – named after an old idiom for frugal, honest times, fitting for the accessible character of this red wine.

Kaapzicht is located at the foot of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch and has been managed by the Steytler family since 1946, now in its third and fourth generation. The location benefits from cooling sea breezes from False Bay, which preserve freshness in the grapes even in hot years. Pinotage, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, was bred in Stellenbosch in 1925 and is considered South Africa's contribution to the international world of grape varieties.

In the glass, the Skraalhans shows dark berry fruits such as blackberry and plum, accompanied by a spicy, slightly smoky note that is typical for the grape variety. On the palate, it is juicy with soft tannins and a straight, fruit-forward finish without any rough edges.

Serve it at 16 to 18 degrees with grilled meat from the braai, a hearty stew, or mature Gouda – a wine for a convivial evening without much fuss.
