Kaapzicht Estate Skemerlig Cabernet Sauvignon

The Skemerlig Cabernet Sauvignon from Kaapzicht Estate is a powerful red wine from the Bottelary Hills near Stellenbosch, one of South Africa's most traditional wine-growing regions. Its name – Afrikaans for "twilight" – refers to the cool evening hours that provide the vines with relief after hot days and ensure concentrated, ripe grapes.

Kaapzicht is a family business owned by the Steytler family, rooted for several generations in the granite-rich soils of the Bottelary Hills. The location benefits from its proximity to False Bay, whose sea breeze cools the vines and adds freshness to the grapes' aromatics.

In the glass, the Skemerlig Cabernet Sauvignon shows dark berry fruits such as cassis and blackberry, underpinned by cedar wood and a hint of green bell pepper, typical for the grape variety. On the palate, powerful yet well-integrated tannins, a juicy body, and a long, spicy finish.

Serve it at 16–18 °C with grilled rack of lamb, game dishes, or a mature cheddar. It also cuts a fine figure on its own in the evening, when the light outside reaches that twilight that gave the wine its name.
