Helderberg Winery Helderberg Cabernet Sauvignon

Helderberg Winery Helderberg Cabernet Sauvignon
A classic Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, demonstrating why the region south of Cape Town is one of the most reliable sources for this grape variety in the Southern Hemisphere. Cooler sea breezes from the Indian Ocean ensure slow ripening and structured tannins.
Helderberg Winery is located at the foot of the Helderberg massif in the Stellenbosch appellation – a site with well-drained granite and sandstone soils that give the Cabernet Sauvignon grip and freshness. The winery focuses on classic vinification with aging in oak barrels.
In the glass, the wine displays dark cassis and blackberry, underpinned by cedarwood and a hint of tobacco. The tannins are firm but ripe – no harsh finish, but a pleasant length with a slightly spicy note. Medium to full body, well-integrated acidity.
- Food: Leg of lamb with rosemary, grilled beef steak, mature cheddar
- Temperature: 16–18 °C
- Drinking window: now until 2028
The name comes from the mountain: Helderberg means "bright mountain" in Afrikaans – and precisely there, at the foot of this shining peak, lies this traditional winery. The first grapes were harvested here as early as 1906.
Today, Helderberg Winery belongs to the renowned Boekenhoutskloof family. The vineyards benefit from their proximity to the sea and the fertile soils. Here, full-bodied, elegant red wines are produced, most notably a first-class Cabernet Sauvignon with aromas of blackcurrant and cedar.
White wine lovers will be in their element with the Sauvignon Blanc: grapefruit, green figs, and a hint of freshly cut grass. A true piece of South African wine history that you simply must try.
