Groenekloof Sauvignon Blanc

Groenekloof Sauvignon Blanc
Fresh, precise, with a true coastal character: This Sauvignon Blanc from the Groenekloof region shows what cool sea air from the Atlantic can do to the grape variety.
Neil Ellis is one of the pioneers of South African winemaking. Since the 1980s, he has been specifically seeking out vineyard sites with a pronounced terroir character—the Groenekloof region near Darling, about 70 km north of Cape Town, is one of them. The cool Atlantic breezes and the granitic soils ensure slow ripening and pronounced aromatics.
In the glass, the wine displays aromas of gooseberry, white grapefruit, and freshly cut lime zest. Beneath these lies a subtle herbal spiciness—elderflower, a hint of nettle. The palate is firm, the acidity lively without harshness, the finish long and minerally saline.
Best served between 8 and 10 °C . Pairs well with grilled sea bass with lemon butter, goat cheese salad, or Thai dishes with coconut milk and lime. Drinking window: now until 2027.
A pioneer of South African winemaking: Neil Ellis began in 1984 as one of the country's first "négociants". Without his own vineyards, he bought the best grapes and made wine in rented premises – a bold idea at the time.
Today, his son Warren runs the winery in the Jonkershoek Valley. The concept remains the same: perfect grapes from the best vineyards – Stellenbosch, Elgin, and Darling. The modern winery with its massive rammed earth walls has stood at the Helshoogte Pass since 2015.
The wines are elegant, precise, and full of character. A true piece of South African pioneering spirit in a glass.
