False Bay Old School Syrah

False Bay Old School Syrah
A Syrah that lives up to its name: Old School here stands for barrel fermentation in large wooden barrels rather than modern technology – a style that gives the wine texture without over-shaping it.
Waterkloof Wine Estate is located in the Schapenberg hills near Somerset West, overlooking False Bay. The winery practices biodynamic viticulture and emphasizes minimal intervention in the cellar. The False Bay range offers an accessible entry point into their portfolio – uncomplicated, yet with a clearly recognizable style.
The Syrah shines garnet red in the glass. The nose offers blackberry and plum, along with a hint of black olive and a touch of pepper – typical of cooler Syrah vineyards near the coast. On the palate, it's fresh and direct, medium-bodied, with lively acidity and smooth tannins. The finish is short but clean.
Serving suggestion: Best served slightly chilled at 16–17 °C. Pairs well with grilled lamb chops, aged cheddar, or shakshuka with merguez sausage. Not a wine for aging – drink now.

Waterkloof – here, everything revolves around the vineyards. Organic and biodynamic methods, inspired by Old World sustainable practices, keep the vines in balance. Cows, sheep, goats, and chickens all provide natural fertilizer, help control weeds, and eliminate the need for chemicals. The soils are free of chemicals, enriched with plant extracts, fungi, and bacteria from the estate's own compost. The vines root more than five meters deep – true terroir in every glass. The vineyards lie five kilometers from the sea, at an altitude of 270 to 300 meters. Sandstone soils with medium-sized stones retain water and ensure balance. 21-year-old vines deliver intense character.
