Château L'Evangile
Château L'Évangile is one of the great estates in Pomerol – one of Bordeaux's smallest and most expensive appellations. Since its acquisition by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1990, the winery has been managed with the precision and investment drive for which Lafite is known.
Pomerol lies on a plateau of blue clay and gravel right next to Pétrus. L'Évangile benefits from this exceptional soil structure: the high clay content retains water and gives the Merlot-dominated wines their characteristically velvety texture and richness. In the glass, this is reflected in a deep ruby red with violet reflections.
The nose offers ripe blackberry and black plum, underpinned by mocha, dark chocolate, and a hint of oak. Herbal spice – thyme, a touch of lavender – lends depth to the bouquet without heaviness. On the palate, silky tannins, smooth and even, well-integrated acidity, and a long, spicy finish with a subtle toasty note.
Serving temperature: 16–18 °C, decant two hours beforehand. Pairs well with rosemary-crusted lamb loin, entrecôte, or a mature Époisses.
