Barbera d’Asti sup. DOCG Vignalina

Barbera has long been considered the everyday grape variety of Piedmont — the Vignalina from Tenuta Santa Caterina shows what this grape can achieve when treated seriously. Behind the DOCG classification Superiore lie strict yield regulations and a longer minimum aging period compared to simple Barbera d'Asti — both are clearly noticeable in the glass.

On the nose, the wine opens with dark cherry and ripe blackberry, plus warm spice notes of clove and a hint of cinnamon. On the palate, it shows the full strength of Barbera: powerful and juicy, carried by the variety's typical lively acidity, which gives the wine freshness and drive despite its density. The tannins are present but round — no scratching, no pressure, but a pleasant structure that carries the long, spicy finish. Not a heavy, sluggish red wine, but one with real rhythm in the mouth.

In the kitchen, it is versatile. Braised dishes suit it particularly well: lamb shoulder, ossobuco, or a hearty ragù alla Bolognese. Equally convincing with risotto with pumpkin and sage, aged Toma Piemontese, or a selection of Piedmontese salumi — Coppa, Salame di Varzi, or mortadella. Those who drink the wine on its own will find it just as convincing as a companion to a simple evening with bread, cheese, and good company. Serving temperature: 16–18 °C.
