Ayl KUPP Riesling "Barrel 18" GG
The Kupp in Ayl is one of the great Riesling vineyards of the Saar — and Fass 18 is Peter Lauer's direct declaration of this origin: a Grand Cru that explores the tension between power and precision.
The Peter Lauer winery has been cultivating steep slopes around Ayl on the Saar River for generations. The Kupp vineyard is situated on the warmest, steepest part of the vineyard, on weathered slate – a soil that directly imparts minerality to the wine. At Lauer, the barrel number signifies a specific selection and aging in oak barrels, which gives the GG (Grosses Gewächs) texture and depth.
In the glass, the Riesling displays aromas of ripe mirabelle plum, white peach, and citrus peel, underpinned by a distinct slate note and a hint of beeswax. The acidity is present but integrated; the mouthfeel is dense and long, the finish salty and mineral with good length.
Serving suggestion: Serve at 10–12 °C. Drinking window 2024–2034. Pairs well with pike-perch fillet with butter sauce, smoked salmon or mature Comté cheese.
