Ashbourne Pinotage

Pinotage has a difficult reputation – and Hamilton Russell Vineyards has been working for years to correct it. The Ashbourne Pinotage from Walker Bay shows what's possible when this South African grape variety is in the right hands.

Hamilton Russell is one of the pioneers of Walker Bay, a cool coastal region about 15 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. The winery is primarily known for its Pinot Noirs – this origin also influences their approach to Pinotage: less extraction, more elegance.

In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red color. The nose offers blackberry, plum, and a distinct tobacco note, along with floral hints of violet. On the palate, velvety tannins, a lively acidity, and mineral depth on the finish – not a trace of the rubber or acetone notes typical of Pinotage.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards

Hamilton Russell Vineyards is located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley – a cool, coastal valley behind the old fishing village of Hermanus, in the far south of Africa. Few wineries on the continent lie so far south. Here, the Hamilton Russell family has pioneered winemaking, demonstrating that South Africa can produce world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Cooling sea breezes from the Atlantic, nutrient-poor soils, and plenty of patience – that's the recipe. The result? Wines with depth and character that don't deny their origin. One sip, and you know: This comes from here, from nowhere else in the world. The wines taste vibrant and precise – fresh red fruits, a touch of earth, a salty hint of the sea. Not too much, not too little. Simply perfect.
