Hamilton Russell Vineyards Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir

Hemel-en-Aarde – the name means “heaven and earth” and describes the seclusion of the valley behind Hermanus at the southern tip of Africa. It is precisely here that Hamilton Russell Vineyards is located, and nowhere else in South Africa does Pinot Noir grow under such cool, Burgundian-like conditions.

Anthony Hamilton Russell established the winery in 1975 – a pioneer at the time, recognizing the potential of this windswept coastal location. Today, his son Tim cultivates the weathered, clay-slate soils that impart the wine's distinctive minerality. Vintage expression is paramount: no cosmetic use of new oak, no manipulation.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red. The nose is dominated by sour cherry and dried raspberry, with an underlying earthy note – damp leaves, a hint of mushroom. With a little aeration, the wine opens up to graphite and mild spice. On the palate, it is firmly structured, with tannins that provide grip without being harsh. The acidity is present and keeps the wine lively. Long, saline finish.

Serving suggestion: Serve at 16–17 °C. Drinking window 2025–2032. Pairs well with duck breast with cherries, rack of lamb with rosemary butter, or mature Époisses.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards

Hamilton Russell Vineyards is located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley – a cool, coastal valley behind the old fishing village of Hermanus, in the far south of Africa. Few wineries on the continent lie so far south. Here, the Hamilton Russell family has pioneered winemaking, demonstrating that South Africa can produce world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Cooling sea breezes from the Atlantic, nutrient-poor soils, and plenty of patience – that's the recipe. The result? Wines with depth and character that don't deny their origin. One sip, and you know: This comes from here, from nowhere else in the world. The wines taste vibrant and precise – fresh red fruits, a touch of earth, a salty hint of the sea. Not too much, not too little. Simply perfect.
