Château Puygueraud –
Thienpont terroir from the Côtes de Francs

Château Puygueraud is located in eastern Bordeaux, in the Francs Côtes de Bordeaux – one of the quieter, lesser-known appellations that connoisseurs appreciate because quality here has not yet been overtaken by fame. The Thienpont family, known for Vieux Château Certan in Pomerol, has managed the estate since the 1980s with the same care they have demonstrated in the major appellations.

The limestone and clay soils on the slightly elevated plateau impart a cool minerality to the wines, rarely found in this price range. Merlot forms the backbone of the blends, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinification follows classic Bordeaux principles: controlled maceration, aging in oak barrels, and patience over technology.

In the glass, Puygueraud's wines display dark fruit, subtle spice, and a structure that makes them well-suited for medium-term aging. Those seeking Bordeaux character without the Grand Cru price tag will find an honest answer here. Recommended pairings: braised lamb, duck breast, or a mature Tomme de Savoie.
