Tascante Ghiaia Nera Etna Rosso DOC Sicily 0.75L

Nerello Mascalese from Mount Etna is one of the most exciting red wine characters in Italy — and the Ghiaia Nera from Tenuta Tascante shows why. On terraced vineyards at an altitude of over 600 meters, surrounded by chestnut and downy oak forests, the vines grow in volcanic ash and lava rock, which gives the wine an unmistakable mineral depth.

Tenuta Tascante is part of the Sicilian wine dynasty Tasca d'Almerita, which has been one of the island's defining houses for generations. On Mount Etna, one of Europe's most active volcanoes, they cultivate steep terraces with old vines — viticulture that demands physical labor and rewards patience.

In the glass, the Ghiaia Nera shows the typical light ruby color of Nerello Mascalese. On the nose, red cherry, pomegranate, and a hint of dried herbs, underpinned by a clearly mineral, almost smoky undertone. The tannins are soft and well-integrated, the acidity lively — this makes the wine surprisingly accessible despite its substance. The finish is long, with a fine salty note that reminds one of the volcanic soils.

Best served at 16–18 °C — with grilled lamb with rosemary, Sicilian caponata, or a strong Pecorino. Those not planning a meat course will also find the Ghiaia Nera a strong partner for pasta with wild boar sauce or braised eggplant.
